How Do I Choose the Right Scent?
March 2006 / HealthFitness Magazine

Don't have a clue how to find the right scent for you? Sherri Sebastian, a trained chemist-turned-perfumer and founder of Sebastian Signs fragrances, says choosing a scent is easy — just buy what you like. "Because the sense of smell is so closely linked with the memory and emotions in general, I strongly believe that everyone needs to go with their gut feeling when it comes to fragrance. Kind of, ‘if it feels good, do it' attitude," she says. "I know a lot has been written about wearing lighter, citrusy-fresh scents in the summer, or heavier ambery, musky scents in the winter, but in the end there are no rules."

But according to Sebastian there are some trends: If you want to attract the attention of a man or want to feel sexy and comfortable, wear something with vanilla, amber or gourmand notes. Sebastian recommends: Sebastian Signs No. 17 with dark chocolate, incense, vanilla, amber scents.

Old fashioned notes like iris, honeysuckle and rose can put you in a romantic mood and are perceived as being very feminine. There are several fragrances with modern interpretations of these classic scents. Sebastian recommends: Gianfranco's "Ferre," which has beautiful iris notes with a modern twist. Stella McCartney's "Stella," and Sebastian Signs No. 44, which contains notes of baby honeysuckle and black pepper.

If you want to feel trendy or cutting-edge, pick a fragrance with "new notes" that don't fit into any specific fragrance type. Sebastian recommends: Thierry Mugler's "Alien" and Roberto Cavalli's "Cavalli."
